Silvertown Quays wins planning approval
The Silvertown Quays redevelopment received a green light from Newham Council in early May following the finalisation of legal agreements on funding and social improvements.
The 24 hectare waterside scheme, which will create a new town centre on the River Thames, with 5000 new homes, shops, restaurants, leisure and social facilities, will act as a catalyst for the Thames Gateway London economy attracting more compaines to the area, boosting local businesses and delivering new jobs. It is one of the largest single regeneration schemes in Europe and will also include Biota! - a world class aquarium, run by the Zoological Society of London, which will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area.
Welcoming the granting of planning aproval, Gateway to London Chief Executive Aman Dalvi said;
"Silvertown Quays has the potential to deliver significant new investment into Thames Gateway London as well as providing much needed new affordable homes and leisure facilties for local people."

The social improvements agreed (under a Section 106 agreement) include 1300 affordable homes, the refurbishment of the Millennium Mill and Silo D buildings, a multi-use community centre, a library, a health centre and a new primary school with nursery facilities. They also include support for local training and job support. The scheme is epxected to take 10 years to complete.

Canning Town
A masterplan potentially worth £1.3 billion has been unveiled for Canning Town. The scheme could see 7,000 new homes and also features 90,000m2 of commercial and retail space, with a new public space called Peacock Square.
The scheme, by Erick van Egeraat associated architects (EEA), will focus on accessibility, creating better bus routes, more navigable streets and improved bicycle and pedestrian connections.
