Local Bus Construction Gets Moving

The new year got off to a great start for businesses in London Thames Gateway; construction of the East London Transit (ELT) bus scheme is due to start this week, whilst plans for Greenwich Waterfront Transit buses have been issued for public consultation.

Enhancing London Thames Gateway's transport infrastructure, the ELT bus priority scheme will link Barking town centre to Ilford. Additional investment from the Department for Communities and Local Government will also enable the next phase to go ahead, connecting Barking to the Riverside development area and Dagenham Dock.

As part of its role as a voice for local businesses, Gateway to London (GtL) has been expressing concern over the transport infrastructure in Dagenham Dock for many months but is now optimistic that the East London Transit (ELT) will improve bus services for local residents and businesses here.

Aman Dalvi, Chief Executive, Gateway to London (GtL) commented: "GtL is pleased that this crucial local transport scheme is being implemented as it will enable local businesses to widen their net in reaching the region's diverse local labour pool." Indeed, 10 double-decker buses an hour are expected to carry up to 6.2 million passengers in ELT's first year of operation along a mixture of segregated and combined bus lanes.
