Woolwich Arsenal DLR Extension to Open Early
Tests carried out at Woolwich Arsenal DLR station are going so well that the original date for its opening at the end of February may be brought forward to January. The station, which is costing £180 million, is being built as part of the regeneration of Woolwich Arsenal.
Woolwich Arsenal station will provide a new link for commuters south of the Thames; the new DLR route will transport passengers from Woolwich to London City Airport in five minutes and to Canary Wharf in 19 minutes, widening businesses' access to London Thames Gateway's diverse labour pool.
The project is a 2.5km extension from King George V, of which 1.8km will be a tunnel under the river. Barriers are in place, as well as an operations office manned by three or four staff. During the 2012 Games the station will also be heavily used by workers and visitors travelling to shooting events taking place at Woolwich Artillery Barracks.
