Last week Gateway to London published a review, along with the above video, which celebrated six years as the inward investment agency for London Thames Gateway, and announced that the 10,000th job had been secured for the region.
To mark this fantastic achievement and convey thanks to our many partners, Gateway to London held a reception at the House of Commons, which was kindly hosted by Rt Hon. Stephen Timms MP. The event, which was attended by stakeholders and special guests, offered the chance to reflect on a terrific six years and look to the future, working with many more businesses across the region.
Since being established in 2002, Gateway to London has advised over 5,500 companies, with 340 of them actively using our bespoke property service to find their new premises. Working with partners, including the ten London Thames Gateway local authorities, the London Development Agency and the Department for Communities and Local Government, Gateway to London continues to play a key role in delivering a prosperous economic future for London Thames Gateway.
With an in depth knowledge of the region and business trends, we have been able to identify growing markets and sectors, and have seen at first hand the opportunities this has created. This has helped us to develop new and emerging business areas such as environmental technologies, and a business offer that meets the requirements and objectives of all different types of companies.
An important part of our work is to ensure that the many benefits of London Thames Gateway's business offer are communicated and recognised. Many factors contribute to the attractiveness of London Thames Gateway as a business location; the fastest growing transport infrastructure in the UK, a labour pool of 3.6 million people, and cost effective available space. These positives provide the foundations from which we can highlight the strength of London Thames Gateway as a business location, and attract and retain more companies.
The benefit to the local economy is clear, and decision makers continue to invest in London Thames Gateway as an opportunity area that can deliver economic targets.
The current state of the financial markets will make the years ahead even more challenging for Gateway to London and the businesses we serve, this underlines the importance of the work we do to secure businesses and jobs in London Thames Gateway. It is therefore imperative that we continue to develop the region's attractiveness, particularly to newly developing, innovative and creative sectors. Here, there is the potential for the creation of new ‘hubs' where businesses can congregate and share resources, knowledge and facilities.
Through excellent networks with partners such as Think London and intermediaries, we will continue to ensure that companies are aware of our services and can be referred. Working with Think London, we have helped to secure over 2,000 jobs from over 60 companies, enabling them to tap into local networks and hit the ground running.
Gateway to London believes that this commitment to delivering inward and re-investment in partnership will continue to ensure London Thames Gateway has a significant competitive advantage in building a broad based and thriving economy, and we eagerly anticipate securing a further 10,000 jobs in the not too distant future.
