2008 London Thames Gateway Annual Business Survey

London Thames Gateway Scores with Business

Gateway to London's annual business survey, published today, reveals that 79% of local businesses are happy to be located in London Thames Gateway.

In a further endorsement of the region, when asked to rate London Thames Gateway as a location for business, on a scale of one to 10, 40 per cent of respondents rated the region eight or above.

Other key findings include:

  • The availability of property at the right price is a powerful attractant for businesses. Around four in 10 respondents cited property availability as a reason for relocating to the region. A similar proportion cited property costs.
  • There is evidence that London Thames Gateway businesses ‘keep it local', with eight in 10 saying that at least some of their suppliers were local businesses, and 13 per cent stating that three quarters of their suppliers were local.
  • Transport was identified as one of the top three issues affecting the area by 85 per cent of respondents. Transport also produced the highest response across most industry sectors, both in terms of importance to business and as an issue for government to address.
  • The Thames Gateway Bridge is the proposed transport scheme of most benefit to businesses - 48 per cent said this would be the most beneficial scheme for their company.

The London Thames Gateway Annual Business Survey is designed to identify what businesses think of their region, what they consider to be the advantages of locating in the area and their priorities for the development of the region.

The annual survey forms part of Gateway to London's regular intelligence and information gathering process for businesses across all sectors in London Thames Gateway, and has established itself as an invaluable tool for Gateway to London's work in defining and evolving the region's offer for business.
