London Thames Gateway boasts an economically active population of 1.3 million, set to rise to 2 million over the next 10 years. Service industries, including professional and financial services, creative industries and ancilliary services are London Thames Gateway's top employers, reflecting the success of areas such as City of London and City Fringe, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Enfield and Stratford. Manufacturing and logistics also rank highly, with both sectors having higher rates of employment in London Thames Gateway than in other parts of the capital.

For example, manufacturing accounts for 40% of employment in the London Riverside area and has an average employment rate of 11% in outer areas of London Thames Gateway. Logistics account for 20% of employment with an even spread of density across the whole of the London Thames Gateway area reflecting a particular strength in both regional and international logistics. With the exception of the City, the Thames Gateway has the lowest overall employment costs of anywhere in London and one of the lowest in Southern England.
