London Thames Gateway has a population of 2.8 million and makes up nearly 40% of London's total population of 7.2 million. London is one of the largest cities in the developed world in terms of its built-up area, and is the most populous city in the European Union, boasting over 7 million residents.

London's and the Thames Gateway's populations are expected to continue the growth that has been seen since the 1990s. Recent studies predict the Thames Gateway to have the fastest growing population in the London area with a projected 11% increase between 2001 and 2016.
